Ilinja Gamjatang Carrollton Review: First Visit

For my Ilinja Gamjatang Carrollton first visit review, I went to this Korean restaurant hoping to find the rich, comforting pork bone soup I remembered eating in Korea.

Since living in the United States, I have not had many opportunities to enjoy gamjatang that truly satisfies that craving. When I heard about a restaurant specializing in gamjatang in Carrollton, I was interested but also cautious about setting my expectations too high.

Fortunately, my first visit was a very satisfying experience. The broth had the deep, savory flavor I wanted, the pork was tender enough to separate easily from the bones, and adding ramen noodles made the meal even more enjoyable.

We also finished two bowls of rice with the soup. That detail probably explains my opinion better than simply saying the food was delicious.

Here is what I enjoyed about the gamjatang, why I recommend adding ramen, and whether I would return.

First Impression of Ilinja Gamjatang Carrollton

When I entered Ilinja Gamjatang, the restaurant reminded me of the casual Korean dining places I was familiar with.

The atmosphere was simple and comfortable. I was not looking for an elaborate dining experience because the main reason for my visit was the gamjatang itself.

For me, a good gamjatang restaurant needs to get two things right: the broth and the pork. The soup should have enough depth to remain enjoyable throughout the meal, and the meat should be tender enough to eat without struggling to separate it from the bones.

I was especially curious about the broth because I had been missing the rich, spicy flavor of the gamjatang I used to eat in Korea.

After tasting the food, I was pleased that the restaurant delivered on both of those expectations.

What I Ordered at Ilinja Gamjatang Carrollton

For this visit, we ordered gamjatang, added ramen noodles, and ate two bowls of rice with the meal.

I liked this combination because it allowed us to enjoy the same broth in several ways. We could eat the tender pork first, cook ramen noodles in the soup, and enjoy the remaining broth with rice.

By the end of the meal, I felt that all three parts worked well together rather than simply making the order larger.

Gamjatang: Rich Broth and Tender Pork

The gamjatang was the highlight of my visit.

The large pot arrived with a reddish broth, pork bones, bean sprouts, and vegetables. I could also see perilla leaves standing above the soup, giving the dish the familiar appearance of Korean gamjatang.

What impressed me most was the flavor of the broth. It was rich and savory, with a pleasant spiciness that complemented the deeper taste of the soup.

I particularly appreciated that it did not taste weak or watered down. Even before adding ramen or rice, the soup was flavorful enough to enjoy on its own.

That flavor reminded me of the comforting gamjatang I remembered from Korea. I had been hoping to find something similar around Carrollton, and this meal came close to what I wanted.

The pork was another strong point. The meat was tender and came away from the bones without much difficulty.

That matters to me because gamjatang can become less enjoyable when the meat is too difficult to remove from the bones. I want to spend more time eating than struggling with each piece.

At Ilinja Gamjatang, I enjoyed both the meat and the soup. The tender pork gave the meal substance, while the deeply seasoned broth made me want to keep eating.

One of my photos shows a generous amount of pork that we had separated from the bones. Seeing that much tender meat on the plate was a satisfying part of the experience.

Looking back at the full pot, the combination of pork bones, bean sprouts, vegetables, and spicy broth was exactly the kind of Korean comfort food I had been craving.

I would recommend starting with the gamjatang itself before adding anything else, simply to appreciate the original broth and the tenderness of the pork.

Ramen Noodles: My Favorite Addition

After enjoying the gamjatang, we added ramen noodles to the pot.

I often enjoy adding ramen to Korean hot pot dishes because the noodles provide another way to experience the broth.

At Ilinja Gamjatang, this was an especially good decision. The noodles absorbed the rich, spicy soup and became very flavorful.

The curly ramen noodles also provided a different texture from the tender pork. After eating the meat, I enjoyed switching to the noodles while continuing to taste the same broth.

One concern I sometimes have when adding noodles to a soup is whether the broth will remain satisfying. In this case, I continued enjoying the flavor even after the ramen had been added.

The noodles also made the meal feel more substantial, which was another reason I liked ordering them.

My recommendation: If you enjoy ramen in Korean stews, I would strongly consider adding it to the gamjatang. It was one of the best parts of my meal.

Rice With Gamjatang Broth

Along with the pork and ramen noodles, we finished two bowls of white rice.

I think rice is one of the best ways to enjoy a deeply seasoned Korean soup. The mild flavor of the rice balances the richer broth and makes each bite satisfying in a different way from noodles.

That was exactly how I felt during this visit. Even after eating the pork and ramen, I still wanted more of the soup with rice.

The combination was filling, but I did not want to leave the broth behind because I enjoyed its flavor so much.

By the time we finished the two bowls of rice, I was completely satisfied with the meal.

My final food photo shows the tender pork alongside a bowl of white rice, with the gamjatang pot still on the table. For me, that picture captures the part of the meal I enjoyed most: simple Korean comfort food with a flavorful soup and plenty of meat.

Price and Portion Size at Ilinja Gamjatang Carrollton

I thought the meal offered good value for the amount of food and the quality we enjoyed.

The gamjatang included tender pork and a broth that remained flavorful throughout the meal. Adding ramen noodles made the pot more filling, and we also enjoyed two bowls of rice.

For me, the value was not only about receiving a large amount of food. I was especially satisfied because the broth and pork were both enjoyable.

I have missed this type of Korean pork bone soup while living in the United States, so finding a version that reminded me of the flavors I enjoyed in Korea made the meal feel worthwhile.

I also considered the pricing reasonable for our experience. The combination of satisfying food, ramen noodles, and rice made it a meal I would happily order again.

Before visiting, I was mainly hoping for a gamjatang broth that would remind me of Korea. I was pleased that the soup had the rich, spicy, and savory flavor I had been missing.

The pork was also tender enough to enjoy easily, which made the main dish satisfying from both a flavor and texture perspective.

Adding ramen noodles gave us another way to enjoy the broth, while the rice balanced its stronger flavor.

I particularly liked that the broth remained enjoyable through the different parts of the meal. It was satisfying with the pork, flavorful with the ramen, and comforting with the rice.

The restaurant’s casual atmosphere also suited the experience. I had come specifically for a good Korean soup rather than an elaborate restaurant setting, and the food was what left the strongest impression.
